D’Huy Engineering, Inc. (DEI) provided construction oversight for the demolition of the existing repair garage and replacing it with a new state of the art (26,800 SF) repair facility with new heavy duty bus lifts and modern service equipment, along with a 7,000 SF renovation that included locker and shower facilities, electronics repair shop, brake shop, parts area and offices.

LANTA performs an important public service to the community and could not cease operations at any time. In order to maintain daily repair and maintenance operations, the first phase of the project was to establish a temporary work area in the existing adjacent bus storage area. DEI coordinated the installation of the temporary services and relocation of equipment.

Due to the deterioration of the original hydraulic lift equipment, it was necessary to evacuate and remove 770 tons of contaminated soil removed from the site. Additionally, contaminated slag located under the building slab and asbestos-containing floor tile were discovered during demolition. DEI’s foresight in creating unit prices and allowances for this work resulted in cost effective and timely remediation.

As the project progressed and because the project was well below budget, the Owner initiated the addition of a high build epoxy floor coating system (27,000 SF), demolition and replacement of concrete driveway and the renovation of an additional 12,000 SF of occupied two story office space (performed during off and evening hours), additional painting in the bus storage area, new rooftop heaters and fans in the bus storage area and other renovation work. DEI provided budget pricing and coordinated the implementation of all of the additional items including coordination with LANTA staff for the two story renovation without interruption of daily activities.
